June 16 : After the unseasonal chill of last week, the warm weather is back and today we heard the first cigale chirrupping in the ash trees. The heady perfume of the flowering summer shrubs hangs in the evening air. The nightingale sings in the ravine by the house.

Le Théron lies in the foothills of the Montagne Noire with views over the vineyards of the Minervois to the Pyrenees and the snow capped peak of Mount Canigou.

"The Cottage" dates back to the 18th Century and once provided separate accommodation for three families. Now carefully restored into a three bedroomed cottage it provides first class vacation rental accommodation for six people in a quiet, rural setting.

Location.

The Minervois, in the Languedoc Roussillon Region , is a lovely spot to visit at any time of the year. Spring and autumn are balmy (the flora in Spring is superb). July and August are hot. Winter days are cool but usually bright with warm sun; you can sit outside for lunch on most days.

Our Surrounding Area

Siran lies at the foot of the Black Mountain in the canton of Olonzac, half way between Roman Narbonne and Medieval Carcassonne. First established as a stopping-off point for the Roman Legions being sent into Gaul, retired legionnaires built villas here.

In the 13th century for want of a greater water supply and also for defence during the anti-Cathar crusades the village was moved a mile down the hill and became a chateau - a village surrounded by ramparts. They left their jewel of a 13th century church behind but continued to come back over the centuries to worship and care for it.

Our domain, Le Théron, nestles on the hillside below the 12th century church. Its name is Occitan (the original language of the Languedoc ) for "bubbling stream" and refers to the stream which runs through our "campagne" of 12 acres of pines, vines, meadows and hillsides covered in thyme and lavender.

We are quiet and secluded, about 1.5 miles along a quiet lane from the centre of the village. The lane ends at Le Theron so there is no through traffic to disturb your peace and calm. We consider it a perfect setting; private but with shops and services just a few minutes away.

The region around Le Théron is steeped in history; palaeolithic dolmens, Roman remains, Cathare castles, bastides, the Canal du Midi, the medieval fortified city of Carcasssone.

The countryside is magnificent. We have mountains, rivers, lakes and gorges all set in a sea of vineyards and olive groves.

Drive east for less then an hour and you'll find the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, drive south if you want to ski in the Pyrenees in winter. Barcelona is only 2 1/2 hours away by motorway. Toulouse and Montpellier are even closer.

For those who wish to discover the delights of the local ‘pays’, we have established special relationships with many local businesses and people so that visitors may participate in varied activities. These can include:

  • visits to museums, caverns, vineyards, galleries
  • restaurants
  • guided visits in the local area
  • the little "tourist train" to Narbonne
  • rental of cross country bikes, horse-riding / trekking
  • boat rental, day trips on the Canal du Midi

A comprehensive information package is available in the cottage with local information as well as suggestions for visits further afield.
